My friend Ashley Blewer made a web-based tool to make it easy for you to see statistics about groups of media files. If you use mediainfo (a free tool that is available for lots of operating systems) then you can export a small metadata file and feed it to Ashley's tool to generate pretty charts.
More about what Ashley did and how. One use case she suggests: "General checking for 'gotchas' like an unexpected amount of audio tracks or timecode data that need to be handled in a different way." It aims to be "a functioning little application ... that I can recommend to people trying to get a better understanding of their video collections without too much work."
