This is my first post here so I hope this is allowed - and I'm not entirely sure of your tags, so I hope I've got that bit right.

I'm relatively new to the vidding game; I have made some vids previously but I haven't done anything for a while, so I'm not a complete beginner. Having said that, I'd like a little bit of help (or program recommendations) because I'm having issues with ripping a couple of DVDs to get source material for my next project.

I currently use DVD Decrypter, but it's no longer being supported or updated and can't handle some of the newer copy protected DVDs, so I'm after recommendations for a program or other method of extracting footage from these DVDs. I'm hoping for a free or comparatively cheap program if such a thing exists.

I'm (still) running Windows 7, and will be using Videopad for my project. I have video footage in VOB format, so would like something that would be able to save to the same format if possible.

If you need any further information, please let me know.

Uh, hi, it's me again... I'm sorry to bother you all again, but I have another question/request. Here goes: Where do you all download footage for projects? I lost access to the site I used for the few movies and one OVA I managed to get. Also, how do you go about it without bringing your ISP down on your head? (I got yelled at by my dad for doing that last time...) I need to know how to do it safely as well. I'm still running Windows 7, if that matters. Help, please? Thank you in advance.

I need to do BASIC video editing for a project.  Literally all I need to do is put two or three clips together into one video and put in a title card or two.  I need something that is a) free and b) easy to use.  What would you suggest?

If I were going to make a multisource vid focusing on auctions in scifi and fantasy (film, TV, comics, music videos, video games, etc.), what sources would I use?

I can think of:

  • Get Out
  • Janelle Monáe's "Many Moons"
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's episode "In The Cards"

I'd welcome other suggestions!

Vid Tagging Assistance

Requesting assistance in tagging vids using Excel (2013/2016/2019). If you have Office 365 this would be ideal as we can collaborate in real time similar to what you see in those ads for Google docs co-authoring where you see the names of people typing as flags. Additionally, if you have ever wanted to get up to speed with Excel for work or to get work this could be one way of doing so while also watching and tagging vids. I teach Excel as well.

Vid Streaming Alternatives

Requesting beta tester of a vid streaming alternatives. If you have an interest in vid streaming services that are either an alternative to  or compliment to You Tube & Vimeo then you can help test out some functionality on some of these alternatives and provide feedback and suggestions. You'd also click around to make sure everything works. I'd also love to hear thoughts about what works and doesn't work about current options.

If you have any questions about either feel free to contact me by clicking here

I don't know if this is an appropriate place to put this, so please be patient with me. I would like to make fanvids, but I'm currently broke. If anyone knows any free/relatively cheap editing software and Blu-ray/DVD rippers that work for a windows PC, I would greatly appreciate it if you could point me in the right direction.

For a vid project, I'm looking to supplement my primary source with some contextless medical imagery. I have it in my head what I'm looking for, but it's kind of a know it when I see it deal, so I expect to have to go through a bunch of material to find what I'm looking for, but I thought maybe other vidders could have pointers on which medical shows would be better to look at.

I primarily want surgical imagery that focuses on the surgeons' hands and the patients' bodies, so you can't identify either the doctors or the patients. The early impression I'm getting as I close-watch medical shows looking for this stuff is that the way they shoot surgeries is very director dependent and thus variable even episode to episode, but I think medical shows must have a house style to some degree. Does anybody know if ER or Grey's Anatomy or Chicago Hope or any other particular medical drama is more likely to use this sort of imagery?

Thanks!

I’m putting together a vidshow for this year’s Vidukon about revolutions and social change, both large and small scale, and I’m looking for some recs! Anyone have any thoughts on good vids on that theme? I’m particularly interested in less well known or non-Western stories, they can be from real life or from fiction, any genre.

Also I’m actively looking for premieres that fit that bill, so if you have a vid you’d like to make on that theme and it can be finished by May, get in touch!

How do you acquire and prep footage for vidding? How do you rip, convert, contort, and cajole source video into the format your editing program works with? Fill out this year's survey!

Let's update 2014's results. What's new and awesome? What's the reliable old standby you still use? Good and bad, old and new, all info is good info that we can all benefit from sharing.

I'm running a history-themed vidshow for this year's VidUKon, and I'm currently looking for recs!

I'm after any and all vids with historical settings, but I'm especially keen to hear ideas about less popular historical eras, non-Western history and marginalised people in history, since I figure those will probably be harder to track down and I want to have a broad variety of things!

You are very much encouraged to self-rec if you have something you think might fit the bill! :D

Hi all!

I'm running a vidshow on the theme of Tropes at VidUKon this year, and would like your suggestions! Time-loops, bodyswaps, doppelgängers...what are your favourite vids showcasing the glory of tropes and common character archetypes?

Come and tell me at my journal! :-)

Hello! I'm running two vidshows at [community profile] vividcon this year -- Lions and Tigers and Vids, Oh My! (focused on animals) and Game Plan (focused on sports, co-VJing with [personal profile] milly). We are looking for premieres and suggestions for both. Please see my journal post for more information on what we're looking for.

Hi Vidders!

[community profile] escapade_con is currently accepting vid submissions for its songvid show until tomorrow night, 2/16 at 10PM Pacific Time. You can submit premieres, festivids, recent vids, older vids... whatever you'd like! Escapade is a slash-focused con, but not everything submitted to the vidshow is a slash vid, so don't let that discourage you! See more information and instructions on how to submit here.

If you are doing a Year-in-Review or other vidding meme, feel free to drop a link in the comments!

I've found a few on my flist or by searching DW at dreamwidth.org/search but it would be convenient to have them all centrally collected.

Thanks!

I'm doing a vid project that draws on vidding techniques and I wanted to compile a reclist of 'arty' vids - any vids that stood out as partcularly inventive in terms of technique, or maybe a bit more abstract than the usual?

I know that's a bit vague, but it's mostly just for research purposes, to get an idea of the kinds of editing techniques that set vids apart from 'video art' or mainstream films.

So, I'm open to classic vids, youtube vids, creaspace vids, amvs, pretty much anything that you might have seen and thought, wow, that was funky!

Any help much appreciated! The project is three weeks, but I'm hoping to get research done this week.

Thanks!

What tools do you use to gather footage for vidding? How do you rip, convert, contort, and cajole source video into the format your editing program works with? This survey will crowd-source this information. The more people share, the more we can learn from each other. Tools you love, things you tried that weren't worth the time and effort, all your vidding experience is valuable.

We all have our preferences, we always will. There's still room to learn from others, find new things to try, new tools to try.

There's space for DVD ripping software, torrent sites, and more. The opinions entered can be anything from "this is perfect and I use it exclusively" to "tried it, didn't work, never again" and even in between. The aggregate data will include as much or as little personal comments as each person wants.

Thanks in advance for contributing! Feel free to share this link and information with other vidders, anyone interested in sharing.
