[personal profile] kottonkrown posting in [community profile] vidding
Hello! I think I may be very late to the party, but I'd like to get into vidding. I've made two vids so far (they're here) and I'd like some advice on how to get involved with the community, how to improve my vidding, what etiquette and protocols are used, and so on. I plan on making another tonight, although I haven't decided what fandom. If someone could help me learn the ropes that'd be lovely.

Hey! Vidding is a party with no last call, come whenever you want!

The nature of the hobby is such that the community is pretty scattered, there isn't one set of community etiquette rules or whatever. It's hard to build community when video hosts are constantly facing takedowns, so vidding has a long history but a very disjointed history. There are vidding communities on youtube that have almost no contact with each other or with vidding communities on tumblr and on LJ/DW and elsewhere.

A lot of the actual talking in the community these days is taking place out of sight- there's a semi-active vidding Discord server, a semi-active vidding Slack server, plus lots of communication happens peer to peer by email and chat and so on. Also people on youtube clearly talk to each other, I have no idea how that works. If you want invites to the Discord or Slack I can send you those- if nothing else, they're good places to ask for people to beta your vids.

There's also [community profile] vid_bingo, which has been hosting monthly vid chatter posts. And [community profile] viddingnews which for a while was posting regular vid news. [personal profile] morgandawn also often posts vidding linkspams full of interesting stuff.

As to how to improve your vidding, obviously the key is just practice, and pushing yourself to try new things. Getting vids betaed by different people also helps a lot- everyone has different things they focus on in vids, the more feedback you get, the more you learn. I've found the vidding community extremely generous with their time in teaching me and providing useful feedback. All you need to do is ask.

I know I'm super late to this and not the OP, but I would love the links to the Discord and Slack, if you're willing!

Hi there, and welcome to the club! Happy vidding!!!!
I think you are already doing a lot of the right things in terms of getting involved with the community and improving your vidding - following other vidders, commenting on their posts, watching their vids and so forth. I used to have a lot of other resources on my web site but that is currently down and I am not sure I will get it up again. In terms of more hands-on support with vidding you can think about getting a beta or mentor, somebody to give feedback on WIPs and talk to about vidding stuff in general. On DW/LJ most people will just give positve and ecouraging comments on vids that are posted and only offer suggestions, constructive critizism or critique when specifically invited to do so (e.g. as a beta or mentor)to make sure it's wanted and not upsetting anybody. However, you need to build a bit of 'social capital' first, e.g. interact with people on their journals and threads so that they get to know you and what your are into as most people are fairly busy and might not respond to requests otherwise.

I've chequed out your vids and as you vidded Christine F I am assuming you are German??? In which case you might also want to join the VidUKon community on LJ/DW/tumblr/twitter. This years con was the weekend just gone and we do have attandees from all over the world, but even if you can't make the way to Cardiff it's a good way to get more involved with things. If you are open to the idea to get some feedback on the Christine F and re-edit it I'd be open to the idea to beta it as I might consider it for next years Eurovision Show at VidUKon. Feel free to PM me via DW.

In that case, kudos for watching a foreign language film! I've never actually seen the film but we had to read the book in school and I found it so depressing that I could not face watching it, though it's supposed to be very good. I'll see if I get some free time to watch the vid again and give some feedback, feel free to prod me from time to time, life can be so distracting sometimes.

Oh no, you should not have deleted it! That is sad. But I'll have a look at the new one this weekend. How do you want feedback, email or PM?
