I'm hoping this is legit here, since you're all interested in meta about vidding.  I'm a former (& maybe future?) vidder ("Lynn C") who feels out of touch.  I recently got invited to give a talk to computer science students at University of Illinois, and I wanted to talk about vidding, with a focus on tools and collaboration needs.  I'll make the results available to all who want them, though.

Because I'm way out of touch, I've written up a rather comprehensive survey.  If you take it before April 25, you'll be entered in a drawing for one of three $20 Amazon gift cards (all I can afford!).   Also, I will post the aggregate results here (and in any community that lets me post the link and gets responses).

Topics covered, if you are interested:
  • Your history as a vidder (years, types of vids by genre/fandom/music;
  • Software used and what you think of it;
  • Communities you follow and any issues there;
  • Collaboration with others and if/how you do it;
  • What's the most fun and least fun during vidding (I sure have my own opinion here-!)

If you want yourself to remain totally anonymous in the results, that's completely cool --  I mostly want aggregate stuff to get me up to date on the process/trends.  Think of it as a chance to tell some software people what would make it easier and more fun!

Here's the link, please help: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Q85QWJS

PS. I've like to reach some amv vidders too... anyone have ideas?

Hello DW vidders!

I've recently gotten into a discussion of the differences between AMVs and vids here on my journal (long post, fascinating comments, links to recs posts by me included) and would love to hear any thoughts you might have from the vidding side of the aisle. Cheers!

I posted this just recently on [personal profile] starlady's thread talking about AMVs and fanvids.

Cutting out a frame from clip A and inserting clip B into it, or overlaying clip B onto clip A in some way. Examples: The Test by [livejournal.com profile] heresluck, which overlays Star Trek TOS onto footage from the Reboot movie to show us stuff about the Kirk/Spock relationship, and I'm your man by [livejournal.com profile] charmax which does it with mirrors.

Sometimes people cut the screen into sections and show different things in each section, sort of like the opening credits sequence to every 70s TV show ever ;) I'm not thinking any really good examples though. Oh! Yes! Vogue by [personal profile] luminosity has a lot of this, though there's a lot of other stuff going on there too.

Something else I've seen is people using effects to texturise (for want of a better word) footage, to make it look old or something. You quite often see sepia tones, old film effects, and similar. Examples: Closer by T. Jonesy and Killa, go back to sleep, by TikiTyler9 (also does other stuff with colour and black and white), I am/Lamb by [personal profile] lim.

lim has a number of vids that have a sketchy, hand-drawn sort of a texture; "Us" is the best known of them, but "This is how it works" also does this. Some of her vids have a different, scrapbooky sort of effect, see eg. "Wallpaper" and "People are People".

(Wow, I wish some of these vidders would write (or point me at) tutorials on how to do this stuff in Final Cut.)

(full comment, for context.)

So... can anyone point me at tutorials for how to do any of these things in Final Cut? (Edit: or other/related mac-based tools.)

(Mods: suggested tags: tech: effects, software: final cut.)

Is it just me, or is BAM now demanding that you sign up even just to look at a vid, if it's not embedded/streaming somewhere else? I've clicked on half a dozen links in the last couple of days, both to vids and to vidder profile pages, and gotten redirected to a "log in / sign up" page, with no way to get to the vids. Is this new?

(It may not be - it's entirely possible that just always have watched BAM vids embedded in posts, and never realized that it required you to sign up. But suddenly I'm hitting links instead, and I can't get to the vids through them.)
