Problems viewing vids on new computer

I just got myself a new laptop, and transferred all my programs and files over.  Alas, some of my vids aren't playing correctly.  One, an avi vid, has no sound to it on the new laptop no matter what program I view it in; two others (a .mov and a .mp4) have green boxes all over the title page at the front of the vids when I view them in Windows Media Player but are otherwise fine (and are good when I play them in QuickTime, but I would prefer to be able to view them in WMP.  I have current versions of WMP, Quicktime, Realplayer, and Divx.  Is there a codec or an update I am missing here?  These all played just fine on my old laptop!

Do they work in VLC (http://www.videolan.org/)?

Don't have VLC, will download it and try it. But that still doesn't answer the basic question: what is different about this new laptop that vids that played fine before have problems now? Something must be different.

I'm guessing the problem is that you're missing some codecs, but that really is just a guess.

Yeah, mine too, but which ones? As far as I know, I've downloaded all the programs I had on the old one! Grr.

Like littleheaven said, codecs are not the same as programs, and I have no way of knowing which codecs you're missing or how they ended up on your previous computer. If you really want to know which codec each problematic vid is encoded with, there are programs you can use to check, and then you can download those specific codecs. But most of us just use VLC. :D

I also think it sounds like a codec issue. Just because you've reinstalled the same programmes as before doesn't mean you have the same codecs on board. VLC comes packaged with most of the current ones. You'll be hard pressed to find a file it doesn't play, and it's free *\O/*
