- General Likes:
- Time travel, including: time travel fixit; time travel with the glorious angst of knowing you're overwriting your future to give the past a chance; time travel that results in forming new kinds of relationships with people, like becoming friends with someone who was an enemy in the old timeline.
- Seers (in the absence of predestination) who know what may happen and use that knowledge cleverly.
- Strict honor codes.
- Worldbuilding.
- Alien POV.
- A sense of wonder.
- Loyalty.
- Characters temporarily putting aside their weapons or sources of power as a show of trust.
- Best enemies, who might kill each other someday but fundamentally respect and trust each other, perhaps more than they do their nominal allies. Rivals and enemies becoming friends, or allies, or lovers, or swearing loyalty to one another.
- Kneeling. Physical gestures of loyalty or affection.
- Unexpected mercy. Mercy in general, too.
- Heroism in desperate straits, characters choosing to be heroic even in a dystopia or doomed world.
- Magical abilities/superpowers in daily life.
- Time travel fixit.
- Time travel with the glorious angst of knowing you're overwriting your future to give the past a chance.
- Time travel that results in forming new kinds of relationships with people, like becoming friends with someone who was an enemy in the old timeline.
- Crack pairings that suddenly make perfect sense due to time travel!
- Characters gaining a new perspective--on other people, history, themselves, etc.
- Characters who were neglected in canon getting to shine, including but not limited to those characters using their knowledge of the future to achieve great things.
- In action series, characters using their future knowledge to become totally badass (especially when it's a female character doing this).
- Culture! I really love a piece that gets into the POV of the culture it's depicting.
- Family structure. How do people see their relationships? Which ones do they prioritize?
- Craft details!
- Clothing, cloth, fibers, weaving, spinning... Also jewelry. Who wears it? What does it indicate (e.g., gender, status, ...?)
- Architecture, how homes and public buildings reflect a culture.
- Food! What do people eat? How do they store food for the times when they can't farm/hunt/forage for more? Do they trade for food?
- Leaders slowly earning the trust of traumatized people who have every reason to fear the worst from the world in general and possibly them in particular.
- A character is disparaged by their own allies, but an unlikely person (such as an honorable enemy or captor) recognizes their excellence and tells them so.
- I already mentioned unexpected mercy, but it goes here too: I love a buildup of fear and then relief, mercy from someone who (as far as the character knows) has absolutely no reason to be merciful.
- Characters who have no mercy for themselves, but can have it for others, or whose friends and lovers disagree with their self-judgement.
- Characters pushing themselves to their limits and beyond, and others being there to catch them when they do.
- Characters going to great lengths to help one another.
- The less-hurt person also being in some distress, and struggling with it, and perhaps taking comfort in their own ability to help others.
- Characters who are convinced that they don't matter and no one cares learning that actually someone does care and does think they matter.
- Rescues! Rescues where the rescuee is convinced no one's coming, implacable rescuers overcoming terrible obstacles to save their friends/lovers.
- Pen and ink. Watercolor. Charcoal.
- Use of light and shadow.
- Limited color palettes can be very lovely!
- Flowing lines.
- Stained glass, decorated pottery, tapestry, art that evokes any of these.
- Pixel art.
- Body language.
- "Royal ease" position, when appropriate (for gods and rulers).
- Favorite artists: John R. Neill, Ivan Bilibin, Leo & Diane Dillon, Alphonse Mucha, Thomas Canty, James Gurney, Jan Pospíšil, Michelle Lockamy. On the comics side of things, Dave Cockrum for character designs & clothing, John Byrne for body language, Alan Davis, David Aja (his Scarlet Witch covers especially).

Fandom notes: I don’t have strong feelings about seeker trine fanon, empurata outside of IDW (in IDW I like the angst/whump of it) or Soundwave’s exact relationship to his casssettes. Follow your spark.
I am 100% okay with continuity soup for G1, and I like both canon Shattered Glass universes but also tend to like continuity soup Shattered-Glass-As-Generic-Multiverse.
However, for the ships where I specified IDW Optimus and SG IDW Shockwave, I do strongly want IDW—their histories there are a big part of why I want those characters to interact!
Prompts, general:
- The SG Autobots are terrifying, so I’d be very into the SG Decepticons being terrified of the nice Autobots when they meet them!
- I love the id factor of having to rescue the sweet mirrorverse good guy versions of your enemies from the horrifying mirrorverse versions of your friends.
- Also the idea of having to impersonate your evil self (with advice from your not-evil not-enemy kinda-prisoner, who has a much better idea of how your evil self acts)!
- I'm up for super tropey over the top scenarios—fell into the AU, got mistaken for your evil self and received their war prize? Find out that your friends are evil here because you see them torturing your enemy and now you have to save them? That kind of thing.
- It's really fun when Decepticons are scared of the medics to me, and that'd make extra sense if they're really scared of their evil counterparts.
- I'd be into as much whump as you like here as long as it's followed by rescue and/or h/c!
Prompts, Megs + Combaticons
- Okay, how would the whole “reprogrammed to be loyal to G1 Megatron” thing work with encountering an AU version of Megatron?
- I'm super into the slave coding mind control trope, both as whump with an evil "master" and as a justification for slavefic h/c tropes with a good guy in charge.
- I’m certain SG Megatron would be horrified by this situation… and wouldn’t that be surreal for the Combaticons?
- (And I am also amused by the idea of the professional soldier Combaticons meeting the Fun Pub SG Decepticons & realizing that this is a resistance movement run by academics. How are they not dead! … Wait, why do they object to the idea of them dying?)
Prompts, IDW1 Optimus + IDWSG Shockwave
- So both IDWSG and IDW Shockwave suffered empurata and shadowplay, but the shadowplay had opposite effects—SG Shockwave is still nice, just even more emotional. Knowing what he could’ve become if it had worked as intended would be traumatic! Horrifying! (… Boggling, given the claim to logic and then the black hole thing!)
- For Optimus: this is the friend and mentor he couldn’t save, who faced a horrible fate for trying to work within a broken system and who then turned into a terrifying enemy. And here he is, having suffered something similar but come through it far more like the person he used to like/admire/love…
- And meanwhile from Shockwave’s point of view: this is the ex-friend who betrayed him and did that to him! The enemy he’s been fighting against ever since! (And sure this Optimus has his flaws but he’d be horrified at his SG self.)
- And both of them could expect the worst from a version of their enemy/friend who has good reason to hate them.

WHAT THE HELL, BRAIN?!
This obviously won't happen in real life. But in that brief instant between sleep and waking out of the dream, I was SO UPSET.
Twelve days until the concert! The Seattle show is the first one of the tour, which means the band should be all riled up. And that I'll have no idea what the tour merch is, so I'll have to make my purchasing decisions in real time. Yes, there's a part of my brain that says buy it allllllll, but I'm trying not to listen to it. No really, I'm trying to, because I know I don't need all the Long Live: The Black Parade merch. Probably.

Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now
Jun. 30th, 2025 06:27 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
Review
I briefly mentioned this in my 2024 reading roundup; I really liked it! The narrator for the audiobook also did a fantastic job-- I'm not sure how much of a difference that made, but I can at least imagine reading the book in written form and liking it less than the audiobook version, since I think the narrator really sells some of the turns of phrase. In any case, this was a pleasant listening experience for me, someone that's already a full on social media hater and has an axe to grind about it.
( cut for length )
The Arguments
Before getting into the arguments, I want to share the author's note from the introduction, dated March 2018:
( cut for length )
You are losing your free will.
Basically, social media is (1) designed to manipulate you and (2) addictive. You spend increasing amount of time glued to your screen, actively consuming material meant to direct your behavior (usually into buying things) and/or giving your information to the platform to help them present the material that will direct your behavior. Weird and bad.
( cut for length )
Quitting social media is the most finely targeted way to resist the insanity of our times.
( cut for length )
Social media is making you into an asshole.
( cut for length )
Social media is undermining truth.
( cut for length )
Social media is making what you say meaningless.
( cut for length )
Social media is destroying your capacity for empathy.
( cut for length )
Social media is making you unhappy.
( cut for length )
Social media doesn't want you to have economic dignity.
( cut for length )
Social media is making politics impossible.
( cut for length )
Social media hates your soul.
( cut for length )
Final Thoughts
( cut for length and tbh I think I repeat myself a fair amount )

2) Saw The Flash film and found it better than expected but also so-so. The big problem to me was the lead himself. Granted his character isn't really written to have any charm but a good bit of the humor fell flat for me, and when he was on screen twice as much it made it worse. ( Read more... )
3) Just an update about the bed situation listed in my last post. Everything went well! The youngsters delivering the bed had no problem with taking the old one down to the moving truck, and moving the other one to another room. ( Read more... )
4) A new wrinkle in the last few weeks is that during yet another heavy rain we got a leak near our front door. ( Read more... )
5) I quite liked this diagram of the interaction between entertainment production and fan activities. This came from an interview on Henry Jenkins' blog about a new set of textbooks for studying fandom.

Bicycling Science
Jun. 29th, 2025 11:17 pm![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I got this book from the library and was not expecting how serious it would be... it's a lot of diagrams and hard math and physics explanations for how bicycles work. Seems pretty interesting but definitely not casual reading or close to a priority right now.
...Buuuut I did still skim through, particularly the section on the science of bicycle balancing, which was really the part I was most interested in. And it's interesting!! That and some of the information on relatives of the bike made me happy I got the book, even if I will return it not having read 99% of it.
Bike Relatives
There were tons of these actually but I'm just sharing the ones that tickled me most.
Sociable Monocycle
Behold:
Unfortunately, there was basically no information on this; the picture is shared without context, and the citation also seems to have no context. I couldn't find any information on it when I searched online either... I'm so curious if this was really a thing and if so, how many there were??
Quardacycle/Quadricycle
Apparently nowadays this is also getting applied to pseudo-cars like this, but it can refer to the equivalent of a bike but with 4 wheels. Here's one I found for sale. What the hell... I wanna ride in one!!!
Velomobile
Basically a bike or trike where the vehicle is encased so it's more car-like from the outside. Apparently this makes the vehicle more aerodynamic. Here's a top-tier video from 2011 where someone shows off his:
Bicycles: How Do They Work?
I've been repeatedly going like: "How the hell do people manage to ride bikes all the time and have it be second nature?? Shouldn't it be really hard to keep the bike balanced? But it seems everyone can do it, even tiny kids!" Obviously the human capacity to learn is amazing, but the bicycle has achieved a level of ubiquity that is unusual for vehicles.
There were three pages in the book that completely addressed this, in a section called "How Bicycles Balance." To quote a bit of it:
It was and often still is widely believed that the angular (gyroscopic) momentum of a bicycle's spinning wheels somehow supports it in the manner of a spinning top. This belief is absolutely inaccurate. [...] Locked steering on a forward-rolling bicycle does not permit any wheel reorientation, and the bicycle will fall over exactly like a bicycle at rest, no matter how fast it travels or how much mass is in the wheels.[...] Still, there is an extremely interesting gyroscopic aspect to bicycle balance: the angular momentum of a bicycle's front wheel urges it to steer (i.e., to precess) toward the side on which the bicycle leans, as can be demonstrated by lifting a bicycle off the ground, spinning the front wheel, and briefly tilting the frame. In other words, the gyroscopic action of the front wheel is one part of a system that automatically assists the rider in balancing the bicycle. [...]
The basic means by which bicycles are balanced and controlled involves vehicle supports that travel only in the direction in which they are pointed [...] For this, at least one wheel must be steerable, usually the front one. This balancing-by-steering function can be performed not only by conventional large-diameter bicycle wheels [...] but also by small-diameter wheels, as on a foldable scooter, by skates on ice, by skis or runners on snow, and by fins or foils in water.
I ended up watching a video that goes over this, IMO extremely well and clearly:
(Honestly I think you can skip the first 4 minutes if you're impatient.)
Watching the bike ride by itself made me feel like... damn, what am I so nervous for?? Not only can 5 year olds ride bikes, bikes can ride with nobody on them at all! All I gotta do is get it going and then sit there!
Interesting to me about all this (expressed in both the book and video) is that research into bicycle physics is ongoing, and previously it seems even scientists thought gyroscopic action was "essential", only to have this be disproven in 1970. I usually think of inventions as something that you make after you come up with a very clear idea in which you know how all the pieces work... I forgot that people can just make whatever, tweak it and iterate on it, and then be surprised at how well it works. And yeah, the design of the bicycle is just incredible!!
I'll end with a paragraph from the intro to the "Steering, Balancing, and Stability" chapter that made me chuckle:
The most visible wonder in balancing a bicycle is that the bicycle can be balanced on just two points of support. Indeed, above a minimum speed, it appears impossible to fall down even if one were to try! This is of course not so; it would be easy to crash a fast-moving bicycle, but riders obey an unconscious compulsion not to do so.

Also, I'm delighted that Kandy Fong said the song I used for 'Can't Help Falling in Love' fit the vid so well!

He was about six weeks shy of his second birthday, which put him in just under the average hamster lifespan. But he had some mysterious hammy health problems that started last September (we did take him to a vet, but they couldn't find anything to explain the VERY noticeable behavioral changes), so honestly, we're just thrilled he continued trucking along for so long with us. He was determined to make the most of his little life, and he brought a lot of joy to ours, and we miss him very much.

And we've already made arrangements to go pick up our next hamster from the same breeder next weekend, because life is short and these lil critters make ours so much better. So. That's something, anyway.

Life in the Mid-Century US: a primer for writers of MASH fic
Jun. 29th, 2025 09:37 am![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
I read a lot of MASH fic recently, and while most of it was very good, there were also a ton of inaccuracies about what mid-century America was like. I'm not an expert, but at the same time, I did listen to my parents and grandparents when they talked about what life was like when they were younger. And also, I know what's changed within my lifetime (born in 1982), and quite a lot of things people today take for granted are actually new within my lifetime, and thus not around prior to the 1980s. Now, this is fanfic, and if you don't care about historical accuracy in your fic, that is a fine and valid choice and I salute you. If, however, you do want to at least try to avoid major gaffes, here are things I've noticed that people get wrong a lot:
( Women's rights: Ms. )
( Travel )
( Money and Credit )( Alcohol )
( Childcare )
( Phone Calls )
( Progressive Ideas )
( The Ad Council )
( Entertainment )
( Police )
These are just a few of the things that have changed in the last fifty years. And, of course, I'm only one person and might have got things wrong. Let me know if you see things I missed

(My largest annoyance with the book so far: the transliteration chosen is, uh, not pinyin, so I'm here like "who tf is Su T'ung-po" whenever a name comes up. My copy already has a random inscription on the front so I might add a pinyin gloss to the authors' names with pencil at some point.)
( intenseish poetry discussion )
I might do some similar comparisons of the Tang poets and then, later on, other sections – I think there must be enough famous Ming poets that one of them has also been translated into English, and at the very least I can talk about Mao Zedong's stuff for the Republic/People's Republic section.

Saturday was also Hyoun's birthday, so I was highly amused when the sound check opened with La donna è mobile from Rigoletto. Because I originally learned that melody in fourth grade as a birthday song!
( Archiving the lyrics here because I know I was able to find it on the internet at some point in the past, but no longer. )
( the rest of the Bocelli concert experience )
And now, my Wednesday nights are free for a (very) few weeks! (Summersings start July 23, and then after that we're right into rehearsals for Verdi; I hope I'll be able to cram in one or two Wednesday night Friends With Bikes rides during the time off, but we'll need to see.)

Also: The OTC mentions Twitch but I want to clarify that getting a Twitch account is free. I would assume under their TOS that asking people to get Twitch subscriptions (with or without Amazon Prime) is against their TOS. There is no such thing as "Twitch Prime." And technically I think X actually can't be allowed to since you can subscribe to individual creators on X.
IDK, I think this policy needs a little bit of hammering out because to be fair it's thorny to enforce their commercial promotion policy as is.
Federal Funding Update, the NPR version

'Where's our money?' CDC grant funding is moving so slowly layoffs are happening (NPR)
God, that's eerie, to see NPR saying the same thing I was saying.
The grants mentioned in the article are all national in scope, btw: it's everybody who's not getting these grants, not just Texas or North Carolina. These grants aren't flashy or sexy, but they absolutely save lives.
