Hi,
I've been using the VLC record function to extract clips from video files, but it often corrupts them. What would you recommend?

Seconding this question. You might want to try FFmpeg (some directions) if you're on a Mac or Linux.

There are a lot of PC options! It depends on what kind of video you're clipping, and what you're trying to clip to.

Personally I like virtualdub 2 - it works with most kinds of video and is pretty easy to use!

But if your editing software can open the same kind of video that your source footage is in, you can clip more quickly by demuxing - basically just exactly copying a bit of footage without changing the codec or container. avidemux is a good option for this, and it has great documentation. You can test whether demuxing is an option for you by trying to import your original source file in your video editor - if it imports and is usable, you can make your clips by demuxing.

VirtualDub... 2?

I officially love you, and I'm going to go and download that right now. I'm still working with VirtualDubMod and VirtualDub 1.9.10.

I hope you enjoy! It's a pretty useful fork of the original.

One of the great things about it is that it can natively export to non-avi containers - when I was vidding with [personal profile] thingswithwings I used it to make apple pro res 4444 mov clips for Da Vinci Resolve on Mac!
