for some reason LJ isn't letting me comment on your "masters of war" post. putting my comments here instead.

i don't know how i feel about this vid. i watched it and then sat here staring at my screen for like a minute before i could close the window. it make a very loud point about what the sgc does to other planets and other people. i have a feeling this is going to end up in my folder of things i show people when they say rude things about fangirls*. this type of commentary on the source is interesting because of the way it makes you think.

*i don't know your pronouns but default to "female" for this type of media-based fandom. sorry in advance if i got that wrong.

Hi, sorry LJ wasn't letting you comment. Thanks for coming back to say something here. I understand what you mean about feeling ambivalent about the vid. It's how I felt about the show, especially after reading other fans' very smart fics and meta about its sociopolitical issues that weren't always being addressed on screen. In a way, the vid wasn't supposed to be an *enjoyable* experience, you know? I think that, even if the point was obvious, it might have done its job if it left such a strong impression on you. So that is cool to hear. As is the fact that you might use it as an example in defense of fans and fanworks. (Sorry if you frequently encounter people who make derogatory remarks about us!)

i keep watching this vid. this reaction isn't ambivalence, it's just something complex that i'm not doing a good job of putting into words. i keep watching and feeling like i'm missing something important. but i keep watching and knowing that the message isn't as complicated as what my brain wants it to be. i think this just feeding into a massive plot bunny i've been nurturing for several years and can't figure out how to start writing.

my meatspace social circle is overwhelmingly male. they mean well, but there's a lot of nonsense out there that the female dominated media fandoms don't produce anything worthwhile. i can't convince them of my taste in fanfiction, but vids are easy to share and inevitably after the first one they ask for more.
