freeware conversion software query

 Hi 

My computer has died a horrific death and I'm attempting to set up my laptop to be able to vid after quite a long hiatus.  I used to use a freeware program to convert files into high quality WMV files that then worked in Vegas. Would anyone know what program it was?  Or if you can offer a decent alternative method, that too would be useful.

I'm far from an expert on either, but I'm guessing possibly either AviDemux or ffmpeg may do what you're looking for? WMV isn't a format I use much, I'm afraid.

Is there a program you use for those formats? Handbrake or something? I feel like I've forgotten everything. Thank you!

There is something called Total Video Converter, which is what I use. There is a free version, which does everything apart from HD, and I used that until a couple of years ago, when I bought the HD version. But it's not a program that's widely used by vidders, so I doubt it's the one you're looking for.

Thanks for the tip. I know I have used that program before, but gave up as it didn't do HD. Nice to know there's an option if purchased. :)
