For a vid project, I'm looking to supplement my primary source with some contextless medical imagery. I have it in my head what I'm looking for, but it's kind of a know it when I see it deal, so I expect to have to go through a bunch of material to find what I'm looking for, but I thought maybe other vidders could have pointers on which medical shows would be better to look at.

I primarily want surgical imagery that focuses on the surgeons' hands and the patients' bodies, so you can't identify either the doctors or the patients. The early impression I'm getting as I close-watch medical shows looking for this stuff is that the way they shoot surgeries is very director dependent and thus variable even episode to episode, but I think medical shows must have a house style to some degree. Does anybody know if ER or Grey's Anatomy or Chicago Hope or any other particular medical drama is more likely to use this sort of imagery?

Thanks!

Try PBS. Ex this video has a lot of close up shots of where the patient's body is mostly under a sterile field and the surgeon is only visible by their gloves and a bit of forearm.

Grey's does, for sure. The problem is, they're on season 14, so there are a ton of eps to look through. But it's a show specifically about surgeons, so there are surgeries in pretty much every ep. Good luck!

I'm not sure I can trust my memory, but the Uk tv show Critical (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_(TV_series) might work for what you're looking for; from what I remember from watching it, it focused a lot on the surgeries, with close up shots of the operations and various bits of surgical paraphanalia I don't remember seeing in other medical dramas.

Holby City is pretty good for this - plenty of close-up surgery shots, plus they tend to have videos in the background of their surgery scenes which are I believe taken from actual surgeries.

Some scenes from the show are available on YouTube (e.g. here, here, and some random ones), though I'm not sure how much of the surgery stuff is in those. There are full episode links here.

I recall House having a lot of those, because none of the main doctors are surgeons, so they're usually watching other people operate on patients.

Grey's Anatomy is your best shot for this since all the characters are surgeons of different specialities (trauma, adbo, brain, paeds etc). There are surgeries in every episode and you normally have shots of just the hands and operation field when things get very tense. You'll have to fast forward through an aweful lot of emoting and relationship drama to get to the surgeries, though. ;)
